Digital artwork of a pair of floating eyes with green irises and black eyebrows, surrounded by a colorful, abstract, cloud-like background. A hand with an extended index finger appears to be pointing at the eyes.

What if?

“Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy played continually throughout the creation of this work

This piece emerged from reflecting on the human tendency to romanticize the past and become consumed by the idea of what could have been. We replay old conversations, relationships, choices, and alternate versions of ourselves as though another life exists where everything unfolded differently. Over time, I’ve come to feel that this attachment to imagined timelines can become its own kind of prison.

There are no true “what ifs.” There is only the life we are living now, the fears we obey or overcome, and the versions of ourselves we either grow into or abandon. Many people reach the end of their lives regretting not living authentically or allowing fear to keep them from becoming who they truly were meant to be.

I think one of the saddest truths in life is that we cannot force transformation onto others. People are capable of immense change, but only when they truly desire it for themselves. This work explores the tension between acceptance and longing, learning to release imagined versions of the past while still holding hope for what may become possible at any moment once we decide to choose it.
