“Dance Monkey” by Tones and I played continually throughout the creation of this work
This artwork, to me, encompasses visibility wounds and the energetic imbalance often experienced by those exploring their gifts publicly. Performing, being seen, and wanting to be seen are deeply human desires, though many people are taught to fear or suppress them. It’s often said that more people fear public speaking than death itself.
At the same time, when someone chooses to live publicly through their art, creativity, or self-expression, the pendulum can swing in the opposite direction. There can be an exhausting feeling of giving and pouring labor, time, energy, vulnerability, and love into your work while receiving little in return.
There is an inherent vulnerability in offering pieces of yourself to the public without knowing whether they will be received, ignored, or misunderstood. But nature abhors a vacuum, and I don’t believe honest creative energy simply disappears. Given enough time, persistence, and faith, even unseen work has the potential to transform both the creator and the world surrounding it.
