A Son’s Mother
“Lights Are On” by Tom Rosenthal played continually throughout the creation of this work
In this work, I explored the hopelessness many of us feel within the country at this moment in time. Although it can be easy to surrender to despair, I believe there is a greater force that moves through all living things, whether we call it God, the universe, or the highest self. It is something ever present, even when we choose to reject its existence, its guidance, or its impact in our lives.
This piece reflects on the contradiction of living in an era where religion is often weaponized to justify cruelty, greed, and power. In many ways, the performance of righteousness has become more valued than compassion, humility, or care for others. There is something deeply unsettling about watching people celebrate harm while convincing themselves that God’s love requires pain for others.
This work portrays the concept that when one is distant from God’s light, they become more vulnerable to false sources of comfort and certainty. When someone has spent long enough in darkness, even the smallest flicker can begin to look inviting and holy. But not every flame is warmth. Sometimes the thing calling out most loudly is simply fire disguised as light.
